400 pages of new insights

Months ago, Matthias Schindler from the office of MEP Julia Reda (Greens/EFA) has submitted a freedom of information request to the European Commission and just a few days ago he finally received 400 pages (!) of secrets surrounding the proposed European ancillary copyright for press publishers/the publisher's right. POLITICO's Chris Spillane has identified numerous "things you need to know".

One for example is that the "press publishing industry had won over the Commission" months before the Commission's impact assessment was leaked in August 2016 thus making the plan of introducing a new neighboring right public. The Commission's summary of a meeting on 8th April 2016 says that the "proposal could also include the granting to publishers (notably in the press sector) of a new neighboring right at EU level."

Although much of the exchange between European Commission officials and lobbyists had been greyed out before it was handed to Reda's office, it is still worth the read as it provides an interesting insight into what happens behind the scenes.
